Concert by Gulay Hacer Toruk and Spyridon Halaris
"Sacred and unholy songs, from the East to the West, from Turkey to Greece" Concert by Gulay Hacer Toruk and Spyridon Halaris, programmed by Alain Weber (head of world music at the Philharmonie de Paris).
Gülay Hacer Toruk
Gülay Hacer Toruk, like her native Istanbul, has her heart set on both East and West. Her secular and sacred poetry has crossed Anatolia, the palaces of Constantinople, the Ottoman courts and the Greek and Latin Mediterranean. The delicacy, elegance and conviction of her singing make it universal and natural. Her repertoire is diverse, ranging from Turkish folk tradition to early music with ensembles such as Canticum Novum and Doulce Mémoire.
Spyros Halaris
Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, player of kanun and various lutes, Spyros Halaris began his apprenticeship in Byzantine chant with Nikos Konstantinopoulos and continued his studies with Spyros Pavlakis at the National Conservatory of Athens. At the same time, he also learned the kanun from Panos Dimitrakopoulos and self-taught the oud and the Constantinople lute (lavta). It was with his father, composer and musicologist Christodoulos Halaris, that he furthered his research into ancient Greek and Byzantine music.
