Description of the work

Artist Graham Hamilton's installation reflects his taste for an archaeology of the artifacts of modernity, and for a tendency towards standardization characteristic of our post-industrial world. The uniform transport boxes that make up his work are filled with a golden liquid in which gleaned objects bathe, echoing the machinist aesthetic of Hangar Y, built in 1879 following the Universal Exhibition.

As time passes, the ruddy substance evaporates, leaving these objects cut off from their context of manufacture and use. Conceived as a memorial, his piece attempts to capture the long time of creation, contrasting it with the fast pace of global freight, and tackling themes of nostalgia, remembrance and ecology. Invited to circulate among the crates, spectators activate the installation by disturbing the surface of the bronze water with their footsteps.
