THE programme artist residencies in the United States
Art Explora contributed to the development of a programme residences in the United States which opened in the fall of 2021 in partnership with the Villa Albertine , a French cultural institution present in 10 cities in the United States.

Villa Albertine

In November 2021, Villa Albertine , the 4th Villa of France abroad, expanded to 10 cities in the United States and welcomed 80 residents for its inaugural season, until December 2022.
This institution reinvents the concept of artist residency with a contemporary vision that incorporates the specificities of the country, moving beyond the model of a villa in a single city, and demonstrates a commitment to creating a new community dedicated to the arts and ideas. Villa Albertine aims to be an innovative project tailored to the needs of creators through exploratory residencies, designed specifically for them across the United States.
Villa Albertine benefits from the support of the Art Explora Foundation .
There Art Explora Foundation and the Villa Albertine share the ambition to renew forms of artistic mobility and to foster shared research around major societal issues.
Visionary on the subjects of access and artistic innovation, the foundation supports the development of eight thematic residencies spread across four territories:
- In Miami, on the topic of environmental emergencies
- In Los Angeles and New York on the creative and digital industries
- In Texas (Houston and Marfa) on space exploration
Co-programmed with Art Explora, 8 French artists, visual and transdisciplinary artists, an astronomer and a poet participated in the Villa Albertine residencies.

This collective of three artists shares the creation of choreographic pieces, performances, and films for the Ballet National de Marseille, which they co-direct. Their aim is to explore the extraordinary richness with which bodies are represented today on social media, in public spaces, and on stage, particularly through films that break down the barriers of dance beyond the traditional stage. Los Angeles, a city where images are born and invented, and whose boundless energy strongly reminds them of Marseille, will offer them the opportunity to meet new collaborators "with whom to dream and invent real stories for bodies" and to consider a possible setting for future creations.

For several years, Dove Allouche has been working on a project often inspired by his numerous collaborations with scientists. During his residency, he will focus on the first prebiotic molecules of cosmic origin. These molecules are one of the leading hypotheses for explaining the emergence of life on our planet. By what creative process could life have arisen from inert matter? And how, from this same matter, can we produce works that embody nothing other than their very existence? In Marfa, an ideal location for celestial observation, Dove Allouche plans to initiate new research in astrobiology to produce laboratory images directly from organic samples.

The installations of Franco-Moroccan artist Hicham Berrada subtly blend art and science, modifying the physical parameters of an environment (water pH, temperature, light, air pressure) to create the conditions necessary for the emergence of the desired artistic result. In Miami, the artist will continue his research on morphogenesis, defined as the study of the laws that determine forms in nature. Hicham Berrada will observe corals whose forms blur the lines between animal, mineral, and plant kingdoms. He will focus particularly on a new species of pollution-resistant coral, resulting from the hybridization of two endangered species, and will meet with researchers who are trying to adapt corals to an environment altered by human activity.

Mimosa Echard is interested in creating hybrid ecosystems where the living and the non-living, the human and the non-human coexist. Her works explore zones of contact and contamination between organic objects and consumer goods, elements that our cultural conventions may perceive as ambivalent, even contradictory. In Miami, a city that is rapidly expanding on the water, Echard intends to explore the cultural, social, and political overlaps that constitute this contrasting urban space: protected and destroyed natural areas, brand-new buildings and shopping malls, labyrinthine residential neighborhoods and ultra-secure luxury villas.

Fatoumata Kebe holds a doctorate in astronomy from Sorbonne University. She specializes in the study of the space environment. Her research focuses on quantifying the impact of space activities on astronomical observations and studying the pollution around Earth caused by these same activities. In addition, Fatoumata Kebe leads an entrepreneurial project, "Connected Eco," which focuses on water conservation in the agricultural sector. She also founded the Éphémérides association, which teaches and organizes activities related to astronomy and space. The residency will involve creating an audio series to tell the story of the lunar rocks brought back by the Apollo space missions from 1969 to 1972. In total, this represents 380 kg of lunar rocks, some of which are still sealed by NASA to allow future generations of researchers to study them with more advanced technological tools.

Martinican artist Simone Lagrand, who defines herself as a "poet-pawolèz" (a term referring to a poet or storyteller), honed her skills in Paris during the 2000s, particularly on the slam poetry scene. Initially finding in writing and oral storytelling a way to confront her childhood and family history, she embarked on "a long exploration of the notions of pleasure and desire in a postcolonial and, above all, diglossic context." This exploration, conducted through Martinican Creole, French, and sometimes English, led her to encounter major themes of the contemporary world. Her project, entitled "Tarot Littoral" (Coastal Tarot), will explore, through the lens of the mangrove, the possibility of identifying ecological and cultural issues common to Florida and the insular Caribbean.

With her camera and sometimes other tools, Ariane Michel often gets close to animals, plants, or minerals to create works that shift our perspective. Like a shaman, she uses films, installations, and performances to redraw the landscape in which our imaginations unfold. In this new cartography, humanity is no longer at the center. This approach invites us to reweave our imaginations and opens up other ways of being in the world around us. Her works have been seen in art centers, festivals, and cinemas, but also in forests, subway corridors, shop windows, places of worship, and on shorelines (from FID Marseille to Art Basel, from Nuit Blanche in Paris to MoMA in New York). For her residency, Ariane Michel plans to capture the imaginary world of Miami from the mangroves, the marshes, and the sky, alongside alligators, crabs, and mosquitoes, to see our civilization as one among many.
