fermer / close

The project

”Go on With the Story” is a multidimensional project that Scribonauts have been implementing in the Croatian prison system since 2016. So far it has consisted of a reading group and creative writing workshops in the only Female Penitentiary in Croatia, online book club for former female prisoners and the general public (+500 participants), regional annual short story competition where the public is invited to write a short story inspired by the fragment written by one of the female inmates (250 short stories received every year), and a short story collection “Go on With the Story”, published by Scribonauts in 2020. This collection includes stories by 12 renowned Croatian female writers, which were inspired by textual fragments produced during writing workshops in the female penitentiary. In 2021 the project and the book won the Sozial Marie award for social innovation. With the aim of fostering wider communication between inmates and the public and widening access to art, we now plan to turn short stories from the collection into multimedia pieces through a collaboration between writers, visual artists, and musicians. This will result in multimedia shorts stories in the format of Facebook/Instagram stories which can be widely shared.

Organization

Matthieu Joffres

Scribonauts are a non-profit organisation which has been developing and implementing cultural and artistic programs for marginalized groups, primarily inmates in prisons and penitentiaries in Croatia, since 2011. By organising artistic workshops and interactive cultural programs (primarily in the field of literature, film and visual arts) in prisons and penitentiaries and public campaigns, our organisation uses art as a tool to bring together marginalised groups, artists, and communities, and thus facilitates resocialisation and fosters the development of closely knit communities based on (artistic) dialogue and solidarity.

The
project ‍

The project was created by CCS associate artist David Llari, and initiated last season with the museums of Strasbourg, Marseille and Williamstown, as well as the FRAME network, all of which were key partners in the project's success. This collaborative effort, the willingness to contribute human and financial resources to the project, and the provision of space and mediation time, have enabled the project to spread far beyond national borders.
The aim is to enable young people to see the world beyond the confines of their own neighbourhoods: to open up to themselves, to others and to the world, through the expression of the body, by appropriating places of cultural excellence in a singular and personal way.
By virtue of their history and their essence, museums and their collections are the ideal partner to bring this project to fruition.

Organization

The Centre Chorégraphique de Strasbourg, also a municipal conservatory since 2008, is part of the cultural landscape as a player in synergy with others, a partner, an interlocutor and a supporter of initiatives. The CCS is now looking to extend its mediation and outreach activities to other European structures.
Since this season and for three years, the CCS has been working with an associate artist, David Llari, whose innovative method enables this concrete experience of "building together" by appropriating the language of the body in cultural mediation in a singular and personal way. In this way, the body enables us to move from a common language to universal expression.

The project

Digital Art School is one of the only creative outlets currently accessible within mental health hospital wards in the UK, having reached over 142,000 participants since launching in 2020. Hospital Rooms, partnering with NHS England and Winsor & Newton, will now send top-quality art materials and deliver a safeguarded programme and interactive platform, designed by and for people with severe mental illness, to every single mental health ward in the country.

Organization

Matthieu Joffres

Access to art and creativity in mental health units in UK hospitals is extremely limited. This is despite evidence to show the arts “can help patients maintain a sense of personal dignity and control in what are often distressing circumstances” (The Power of Art, 2000), and a real appetite from patients to participate in artistic activity, with one patient saying “I would have given anything to paint”.

Hospital Rooms brings the highest quality artwork and creativity activity into these spaces, working with acclaimed artists to catalyse a fundamental shift in the way we consider and treat people with the most difficult of mental health diagnoses.

The project

Trafó House of Contemporary Arts (Budapest) and Studio ALTA (Prague) join forces to realize new tours of Studio ALTA’s ”PerformanceBus” in Hungary, further developing the experience of earlier dispatches in Czech Republic and Armenia. The ”PerformanceBus” was originally conceived by Studio ALTA with the aim of decentralizing attention directed towards the diverse platforms, institutions and individual activities dedicated to performance art in different regions of the country. In Hungary, due to the ongoing political changes and the shrinking access to critical culture across the country, it has become an increasingly pressing question for Trafó, how the institution could decentralize its activities and facilitate access to contemporary art in different parts of the country. Without institutional partners and public infrastructures that could make the regional touring of artists possible, this becomes a task for new artistic and curatorial imaginaries, which is why we are interested in the experimental project ”PerformanceBus”. Together with Studio ALTA and in collaboration with local artists, we would like to realize three tours of the ”PerformanceBus” in Trafó’s 2025/2026 season, in order to open up a “magic portal” and imagine a more free, democratic and equal acccess to contemporary art and critical culture across Hungary.

"National Gallery: Jan van Huysum Visits..." Exhibiting a National Gallery masterpiece outside the museum, in direct contact with the public.

The project

National Gallery: Jan Van Huysum Visits is the sequel to the highly successful Artemisia Visits project, conducted in 2019. For Artemisia Visits, Artemisia Gentileschi's self-portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria (c. 1615-1617) was presented in five non-museum venues across the UK: a doctor's surgery, a girls' school, a women's prison and two libraries. Never before has a 17th-century painting from a national collection been exhibited in this way, making it a unique project. In 2021, the National Gallery plans to tour Flowers in a Terracotta Vase (1736-1737) by Jan van Huysum. This eighteenth-century painting will appear in six new unusual locations around the UK, with the aim of promoting wellbeing, particularly among audiences who have been most affected by COVID 19. The National Gallery will be working with a range of cultural and social partners on this project.

The National Gallery

Founded by Parliament in 1824, the National Gallery houses one of the world's largest collections of paintings, taking visitors on a journey through the art of Western Europe over seven centuries, from the 13th to the 20th century (Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Velàzquez, Titian, Rembrandt, Turner, Monet, Van Gogh...). The museum's main objectives are to enrich the collection, preserve it and make it accessible to all visitors.

The
organization ‍

Seville's Museo de Bellas Artes, considered "Spain's second art gallery", spans two centuries of history. Its origins as an institution can be traced back to Spain's 19th-century Disestablishment Laws, which determined its installation in a former monastery and the nature of its collections, most of which came from institutions that had by then disappeared. It features important Baroque works by artists of the Seville school, such as Murillo, Zurbarán and Valdés Leal. Over the years, the museum has become an essential part of Seville's cultural identity.

That is the question that has inspired the creation of the arts centre in the Sainte Gertrude residence in the heart of the Marolles area in Brussels. Visiting artists take inspiration from encounters and conversations with people who live and work there, and those encounters will result in artworks that will eventually make up the care home’s permanent collection.

Organization

The National Theatre Wallonia-Brussels, directed by Pierre Thys, has created a collective imagination with mulitdisciplinary partners. They work with artists and cultural organisations in Brussels and nationwide, as well as with organisations beyond the arts sector, building new collaborations.

The creation of an art centre in the Sainte Gertrude residence, designed by Mohamed El Khatib – an associate artist of the Théâtre National – is part of this commitment to reach out to the widest possible range of audiences by creating a link between the sectors of art and caregiving, and by breaking down the barriers between artistic disciplines. A number of initiatives will be carried out to invite audiences to step through the doors of the retirement home.

The ”Tell Me Your Story” project aims to create a digital repository to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Cycladic islands, specifically Anafi, Sikinos, and Kea. These islands, deeply rooted in traditional practices and folklore, face threats from overtourism and climate change, which undermine their unique identity. The project will gather oral histories through intergenerational interviews, focusing on material culture, biodiversity, and intangible traditions. The Museum of Cycladic Art, through its ”Cycladic Identity” initiative, leads the project with support from partners like the Heritage Management Organization and the National Technical University of Athens.

By utilizing innovative technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and Large Language Models (LLMs), the project will streamline the transcription and thematic analysis of oral stories. Human experts will work alongside AI to ensure cultural accuracy and preserve these traditions for future generations. The project aims to connect younger generations with their cultural roots and raise awareness about Cycladic heritage both locally and globally. It will also serve as a model for future cultural preservation initiatives in other insular communities. Community engagement, digital platform development, and global outreach are central components of this initiative, fostering both local involvement and international cultural exchange.

The home loan challenge

"Musée comme chez soi" (Museum as home) involves organizing home loans of works of art in the vicinity of the museum, in neighborhoods with a strong social mix.

"For me, museums should never be safes," says Claire Leblanc, Director of the Musée d'Ixelles. Taking advantage of its closure for renovation until 2024, the Musée d'Ixelles has taken up the challenge of breaking down walls, by offering a few local residents the chance to host a work of art in their home for a weekend. At the same time, they agreed to let visitors - family, friends and neighbors, as well as curious passers-by and museum regulars - discover the work. The sociology of the neighborhood offers an opportunity to reach an audience unfamiliar with cultural institutions. An operation of this kind calls for a solid canvassing effort upstream: posters, meetings with associations, participation in festivities, etc. Then the creation of a host-mediator tandem, to take care of all the details, from the safe reception of the work to the mediation. "The important thing is simply to enable people to talk about the work in their own words, with their own story," explains one mediator. The first edition was a resounding success, not least for its conviviality. The initiative, which has already been renewed, will ultimately create a large community of ambassadors who will be involved in the discussions surrounding the museum's reopening.

The museum

Founded in 1892, the Musée d'Ixelles occupies a prime position on the Belgian cultural scene. Its permanent collections, comprising 12,000 works, offer a broad panorama of Belgian art from the 19th century to the present day, and include a number of "happy accidents" such as works by Miró, Picasso and the complete collection of original posters by Toulouse-Lautrec. Currently undergoing renovation and expansion, the Musée d'Ixelles is deploying a transitional project of dynamic intra- and extra-muros closure under the label "Museum in Progress", until the reopening in 2024.

Musée comme chez soi" is a participatory project that creates links. It is also a great lesson in humility for the museum teams: the status of the work and its appropriation are totally revisited. After six editions, obtaining the Award Art Explora award is a wonderful opportunity to develop this extraordinary adventure in another neighboring district that is clearly less familiar with the museum."

"Diaries: Lindart and the Albanian Women Artists Association", Bulevard Art and Media Institute, Albania

Diaries is a way to create an archive as a commons through the lens of the Lindart Association - the first and only Women’s Artist Association in Albania after the end of the Communist Regime in 1991. Conceived in 1993 and founded in 1994 by 14 women artists working within the art scene at the time, Lindart responded to the need for creating new learning opportunities in a context in which old patriarchal traditions continued to shape the development of culture and visual art. The collective opened the Lindart Cultural Center in 2000, and between 2001 and 2010 they developed a program that produced exhibitions, workshops and events. The group also decentralized their activities from the capital city of Tirana, expanding participation in the association to other cities in the country. Despite the historical and international significance of Lindart’s program, their work and their struggle as artists and as women is barely known. Since 2022 Diaries has opened the possibility of creating an archive starting by public participation to the research. The nature of the project is intergenerational, participative with both local and international audiences and archives, embracing art and education as an ongoing methodology.

"SaludArte": teaching nursing staff to develop their perception and creativity through the arts.

The project

SaludArte is the result of a collaboration between Centro Botìn and the Marqué de Valdecilla hospital. Through various artistic activities and an 8-session training course created in partnership with Yale University's Center for Emotional Intelligence, the hospital's nursing staff learn through the arts to develop their perception and understanding, and to better manage their emotions or potential conflicts. The aim is, through creativity, to give them the means to understand the challenges they face in their working environment and find innovative solutions to deal with them. In 2019, training helped alleviate some burnout through the organization of concerts or a photo competition, carried out by the caregivers themselves and supported by Centro Botìn. An improvement in well-being at work has been noted, with a positive impact on patients and their families. Centro Botìn intends to continue these training courses and artistic activities for hospital staff, and to offer patients access to art via an in-house television channel and social networks.

Podcasts created by and for the public

"Légato, à l'écoute de l'art": creation of podcasts based on works in the collection for audiences far removed from culture, both children and adults.

The "Légato, à l'écoute de l'art" project weaves links between the contemporary art collection of former gallerist Yvon Lambert, who founded the Collection Lambert, and audiences far removed from culture, through the creation of podcasts, produced by the public themselves and broadcast in the institution's exhibition rooms. Gathered in groups, children and adults are invited to share their intimate vision of a work, using language, voice and text. Accompanied by a sound artist, they create a sound proposal that takes either abstract or narrative form. These podcasts are available in two formats. The first, shorter, is more intuitive and can be played on a mobile device; the second, more theoretical, can be listened to in sound seats. An alternative to audioguides, QR codes, labels, etc., rethinking mediation in a different, more inclusive way, "Légato is a fine participative mediation project", sums up Diane Haudiquet, in charge of young audiences. Conceived/created by students at Ecal, the École cantonale d'art de Lausanne (Switzerland), the sound devices are made by craftsmen in the Avignon region in an eco-responsible approach. These words can be taken outside the museum, to meet a different audience. Supporting contemporary creation, enhancing the visitor experience, making art accessible to all: the device combines a number of objectives and creates a concrete tool. Its method can be applied to any institution.

Mindful Art ® x Tactile Reproductions is an innovative project that transcends the boundaries of art by offering a universal experience. This harmonious device is aimed at both sighted and visually impaired people, as well as art lovers and neophytes. By linking the collections of several museums through a common approach, the project integrates perfectly with the programme of the institutions and adapts to their diverse audiences.

The unique fusion of Mindful Art® meditation with tactile reproductions of works of art provides an enriching sensory exploration. Visitors discover art through touch, sound and meditation, transforming their relationship with the works. This sensitive and emotional experience, which requires no prior academic knowledge, fosters a deeper and more inclusive understanding of the world. It reminds us that humanity shares a common essence across cultural, linguistic, physical and temporal differences.

The sound capsule aims to slow visitors'pace, transforming the museum into a place of well-being, while tactile exploration encourages a more attentive presence during the visit.

The performance workshops help to raise awareness of these artistic proposals, while at the same time creating a deep commitment from participants through an enriching emotional connection.

"Curating the Periphery", KRAK Center for Contemporary Culture, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Curating the Periphery is an informal but comprehensive project which aims to establish protocols and create tools for total engagement within which new values are formed in the socially neglected environment of the city of Bihać. Using curatorial practice with the intention of intervening in socially relevant processes, the project deals with the challenges of working in the field of contemporary culture and art in a context characterized by post-war, post-socialist and post-industrial trends. Respecting local characteristics and keeping in mind the urgency of the moment, project consciously avoids passive audiences and strives to establish and strengthen the community. It is a project which contemplates the distance between the artistic image and real life in the context of the European periphery and a marginalised environment such as Bihać. It initiates a discussion on present relevant issues in a traumatised, post-genocide society. Searching for possible answers to the questions ”how to articulate an artistic discourse on the European periphery” and ”how to motivate urban reinvention in a post-socialist and post-industrial spatial context”, the project focuses on the KRAK and its specific geography, which serves as a starting point for understanding the complex political, social and cultural layers within which it operates.

"Inspire": Welcoming CM1 - CM2 children who have dropped out of school to a micro-school set up in the heart of the museum.

The project

The micro-school project has been tested since January 2020. It was born of a meeting between the Collection Lambert and the French Ministry of Education, in the heart of an area with a poverty rate of 31%. For the time being, it welcomes 6 children, and involves a large number of pupils in conventional schooling. Fundamental learning is concentrated in the mornings, and is based in part on works of art in the museum. Afternoons are devoted to workshops led by artists and scientists alike. In 2020/2021, for example, a project will be carried out to create and develop a 500 m2 garden, and some 216 hours of workshops are planned. The Inspire micro-school is: a pilot educational project combining the arts and sciences, a partnership with 3 elementary school and 2 secondary schools, over 160 pupils aged 8 to 15 involved from the 1st year, 4 partner cultural institutions, 9 artists in residence over 10 months, 4 artistic disciplines covered.

Lambert Collection

The Collection Lambert in Avignon is a museum of contemporary art created in 2000 on the initiative of gallery owner Yvon Lambert, who donated to the French state a collection of major works from the 2nd half of the 20th century and the early 21st century.

A VR Odyssey among the treasures of the library

"Odyssée" offers the general public, mainly teenagers, the chance to discover the library's treasures, and then become prescribers, via a fun virtual reality experience.

The Bibliothèque Humaniste de Sélestat has teamed up with Paris-based interactive design agency Mosquito to use virtual reality to attract a younger audience to a library with rich heritage collections. For the first time, wearing a virtual reality headset, the public can move around a space in 6Dof (six degrees of freedom), offering total freedom of movement (you can walk, run, interact with other participants). A "hybrid of a traditional exhibition, an escape game and a virtual reality video game", this Odyssey offers a new way of discovering the museum's collections, which revolve around the collection of Beatus Rhenanus, a Selestadian humanist and friend of Erasmus, who bequeathed an exceptional library to his hometown in 1547 (his 670 works make up one of the richest collections of the Renaissance, listed in Unesco's "Memory of the World" register). The scenario? The four players must search for 4 books and one object to support the 5 stories that make up "Odyssey". The new Oculus Quest 2 headsets, equipped with 4 wide-angle cameras, make it possible to experiment with new forms of immersive storytelling."Very entertaining, very interesting. Highly recommendable, it's another way of visiting the Humanist Library and discovering its works. Absolutely worth doing again", agree the first users...

"M-CASE": a sensory experience to discover contemporary artworks in a totally dark space.

The project

The M-CASE (Museum Contemporary Art Sensorial Experience) project grew out of the successful VIBE (Voyage Inside a Blind Experience), a sensorial corridor plunged into total darkness in which sighted visitors could experience the works of Josef and Anni Albers through senses other than sight. M-CASE is an itinerant modular space that can be placed both inside and outside the museum. Completely dark, it uses tactile elements, 3D reproductions and a sound system to offer a sensory experience of contemporary art. Accompanied during their visit by visually impaired or blind mediators, visitors will experience the museum as a genuine place of encounter and integration.

Fondazione Burri

The Fondazione Burri was founded in 1978 by the artist Alberto Burri. It is divided into two monographic museums: the Palazzo Albizzini and the Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco, both in Città di Castello. It boasts the most comprehensive collection on the artist.

Cosmic movements

"Yet, it moves!" is an innovative exhibition format, connecting art and science on the subject of movement by directly engaging Copenhagen's residents through installations in public spaces.

Imagine a city where, at every street corner, you're confronted with an installation studying your movements, on a scale ranging from the micro to the macro-cosmos... Welcome to Copenhagen! Initiated by the young art center Copenhagen Contemporary (CC) and curator Irene Campolmi, this highly ambitious project combining contemporary creation and scientific research will soon be implemented in public spaces, starting in November 2022 and then in 2023. The façade of Industriens Hus, near the town hall, will be covered with words gleaned here and there from the continuous flow of the Internet and the media, as well as from books and even conversations, translated into scripts by performer Nora Turato. As for the Dronning Louises Bro bridge, one of Copenhagen's busiest bicycle lanes, it will play host to a large-scale sound installation designed by Precious Okoyomon ("RADIO TOWERS -Moving Frequencies"). This will connect "the gravitational waves that humans experience on earth as they move, and the gravitational waves that occur between other entities in the universe". A second tower is due to be installed in King's Gardens in 2023. Still in its development phase, this programme art project aims to reach out to a different audience than those who visit art centers, by engaging them in their everyday lives. "Yet, it moves" has already been awarded the Bikuben Foundation Vision Prize 2021.

"The Significance of Art at Work", Kunst På Arbejde, Denmark

KPA addresses a societal need that many museums and cultural institutions invest significant resources in reaching non-users. We engage people at their workplaces, creating encounters with art in everyday work environments and non-museum settings. With the project ”The Significance of Art at Work,” we aim to enable even more people to encounter art in their workplace - enhancing these encounters with specific interaction tools and bridging the gap between workplaces and artists. The project involves the development of a conversation kit, educational materials, and bridge-building events between the workplace and the art world. This initiative benefits society by enhancing cultural education, benefiting museums and art halls by expanding their audience base, improving workplace well-being, and fostering a more sustainable art scene that ensures broader access to the art world for citizens who might otherwise be excluded due to structural, economic, or cultural reasons. The project will benefit many parties and have a range of positive effects at multiple levels: More people will enjoy and benefit from art - strengthening their relationship, interaction, and experience with art - and thereby gaining access to cultural education. Research shows that when people have good cultural capital, they do better in many other aspects of life.

All about the museum behind the scenes...

"Behind-the-scenes of creation to awaken vocations": create audio and video content to give all audiences a behind-the-scenes look at the museum's various trades.

How does a museum work? What do we do there? This is the ambitious project of the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon (macLYON): to present a behind-the-scenes look at a museum of contemporary art, the people involved and the different professions that coexist within it. Every time we've published content on the museum's professions on social networks, it's received rave reviews, and people keep asking for more," says Muriel Jaby, head of the communications department. In light of this growing curiosity about these subjects, the museum intends to promote a better understanding of how it works. Launched in June 2021 following the confinements, the first series of podcasts revealed the reserves, showed how an exhibition is hung and dismantled, not forgetting its vernissage, the restoration of a contemporary work, a visit to an artist's studio, a pre-exhibition work meeting, the preparation of an exhibition catalog, not forgetting the anecdotes, "the lettering that doesn't stick or the cab that doesn't arrive". macLYON had already launched a series of videos, Paroles d'artistes, which it hopes to perpetuate and improve by subtitling or dubbing them in LSF to make them accessible to all. "Create new tools with a professionalizing dimension. And strengthen attachment to the structure. It's an aspect of our relationship with the public that we feel very strongly about, and we're going to continue in this direction!" announces Muriel Jaby. To go even further, invest all fields and media, reach a different audience and rely on educational relays, the ambition is to gather this content in a MOOC.

The project will promote independent living for individuals with diverse abilities through artistic participation. Aligning with institutional shifts towards inclusion and autonomy, participatory art acts as a catalyst for transforming the role of people with special needs. Located in Barbanza, region in Galicia, Spain, with over 65,000 inhabitants, the project partners with Asociación Ambar, which works with approximately 1,100 diverse individuals. We apply New Patrons’ established methodology: an expert mediator, Natalia Balseiro, will facilitate the participatory process, involving individuals with special needs and a broader local critical mass. The creative dynamic spans a year and a half, including at least 100 participants across a minimum of 20 participatory sessions aimed at unraveling shared concerns. Eventually, a suitable artist will be appointed to create artwork responding to community demands. Learnings will be shared with similar communities and entities, through (1) a toolkit, (2) two “Art & Diversity” forums: “Local contexts, diverse-abilities and cultural work” (local, onsite) and “Crip theory and European experiences” (international, online). The process, as a source of ideas, community cohesion, and artistic perspectives, and the resulting work (i.e.: performance, installation, digital art), as a materialization of these elements and legacy for the future, are equally transcendent.

KORAL is an application that converts the smartphone into a musical instrument for discovering, playing and creating in a group. Thanks to research at IRCAM and with the help of AI, simple, customisable gestures activate musical sounds and patterns without ‘false note’, for an intuitive relationship with musical creation and a (re)discovery of repertoires.

Developed for and by people with disabilities (psychological, mental or motor), the application brings the virtues of music to all, breaking down the barriers of acquisition and learning. KORAL has been designed in response to the needs and financial constraints of medical and social structures, and offers an innovative, simple, fun and free tool to facilitate the organisation of group musical discovery and creation workshops.

After a phase of validating the benefits of KORAL, tested with around a hundred participants in the first workshops held in the Paris region, the project is now focusing on rolling out the solution nationwide. The dissemination methodology is designed to be collaborative and progressive, and is based on 4 principles : spreading the word, sharing resources, individualised support and networking people with complementary skills.
