Dardan Zhegrova

Biography

Dardan Zhegrova (b. 1991) is a Prishtina-based artist whose work focuses on the object and performance. Most often based on poems that are always found at the beginning of the conception of a new piece, his texts deal with partly fictional and partly real-life events, mostly described from a first-person point of view. Often, the artist is addressing an (imaginary) counterpart he or she is researching. There are no pronouns like "she" or "he" - the narrative unfolds between "I" and "you". Here, the boundary between the artist's subject and the person he is addressing often seems to blur.

This dissolution of the boundaries of a classical narrative form is also reflected in the structure of time within the poems, where future, present, and past frequently merge. This breaking down of various boundaries in Zhegrova’s work also reflects his queer identity, which oscillates between female and male attributes, deliberately rejecting and transcending a normative understanding of gender.
