Performance - Level Up (Excerpt from DUB), Amala Dianor

For his new creation, Amala Dianor draws on the perpetual reinvention of urban dance with 11 young dancers and a live musician. An ode to the energy of the street! Accompanied by musician/composer Awir Leon, live on stage, the choreographer invites young virtuosos of the new urban dances that are being invented everywhere in underground venues and instantly broadcast around the world via social networks. Amala Dianor, himself a prolific hip-hop dancer, observes how the younger generation draws on their own references to create new gestures, and in turn appropriates these practices to create a new community through a shared, immersive creative process. One of the challenges lies in the artistic encounter between dancers from the USA, South Africa, India and France, all of whom master techniques such as waacking, dancehall, electro, pantsula, new style or krump... Amala Dianor sees Level Up (extract from DUB) as an open, joyful and utopian exploratory space where difference is a richness and people are beings in search of sharing.

Amala Dianor

A self-taught dancer with a brilliant career in hip-hop, Amala Dianor enrolled in the advanced program at the National Center for Contemporary Dance in Angers, from which he graduated in 2002. For ten years, he worked as a performer, drawing inspiration from a wide range of techniques. In 2012, he founded his own company after winning two awards at the 2011 Reconnaissance competition for his first choreography, *Crossroad*. The choreographer quickly made a name for himself in the world of dance for the uniqueness of his elegant and organic style, which is rooted in a formal exploration of movement at the intersection of styles. Gliding with virtuosity from one movement language to another, he strips choreographic techniques of their spectacular dimensions, retaining only the raw movements. Drawn to encounters and dialogue between people, he develops a fusion dance that blends forms and opens up a poetics of otherness. Since 2014, he has been collaborating with electro-soul composer Awir Leon, who creates the music for his performances. He occasionally collaborates with musicians, visual artists, actors, writers, and calligraphers... In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
