Sound Experience - The Open Sea: A Sonic Journey Through the Ocean
Spend twelve minutes immersed in an immersive soundscape, lying on a deck chair set up right by the sea. At first, you hear the ocean coast—waves, wind, and the cries of seagulls—then, without a break, the transition underwater: once in this new world, the sounds of nature blend with those of human activity, illustrating humanity’s encroaching presence on marine ecosystems. This creation by the Oreille Indiscrète collective, in binaural ambisonic sound, consists primarily of sounds recorded by hand from all corners of the world.

AN AUDIO IMMERSION
Embark on an auditory journey. From the deck of a sailboat, echoing the museum ship, the experience invites visitors to leave the surface behind and let themselves drift into the depths.
There, underwater, a world speaks. The composition unfolds like a symphony of beings and matter, where non-human life becomes music. As we move forward, the soundscapes reveal themselves in a gentle, contemplative atmosphere: the whisper of currents and the movement of water masses, the echoes of the seabed, and then the traces of life that populate the depths—the crackling of coral reefs, as well as sounds stemming from human, industrial, or even military activities.
Conceived at the intersection of art and science, the work is grounded in true geographical accuracy and meticulous listening. It blends real sounds with reconstructed ones to create a landscape that is both faithful to reality and dreamlike, using a dreamlike approach that seeks to disorient the listener and reinvent the way we experience sound.
Throughout this immersive experience, environmental concerns are gently brought to the surface, without ever imposing a particular message: it is through the emotion and beauty of life itself that the experience draws our attention to the oceans.
EAR THAT OVERHEARS
Oreille Indiscrète is a music and sound collective based in Le Mans, at the intersection of artistic creation, research, and experimentation. It explores immersive listening by blending contemporary music, electronic music, and original sounds in interdisciplinary projects where sound becomes a vehicle for meaning and emotion.
Founded by composer and researcher Noémie Favennec and sound designer Benjamin Favennec, the collective creates works that engage with the major issues of our time, such as raising awareness about ocean noise pollution. Its work draws on collaborations with artists, scientists, and audiovisual creators.
Oreille Indiscrète stands out for its commitment to exploring new ways of listening to and experiencing sound. Through performative and immersive formats, the collective transforms listening into a space where disciplines converge and an invitation to rethink our relationship with the environment.
