"TO DA BONE" performance by (LA)HORDE

Created for 8 Jumpers and 1 DJ, TO DA BONE also exists as a live performance that can be adapted to any type of venue. Accompanied by Krampf’s eclectic musical atmosphere—which blends hardcore tracks with ambient or acoustic layers—the dancers recreate the piece’s formations in a semi-improvised manner. They alternate between energetic jumpstyle moves and moments of stillness or rest, playing with the various elements of the performance space.

In a world where revolution happens at night and laws are passed at dawn, what new forms can insurrection take? *To Da Bone* is a work that seeks to explore an intimate youth revolt. It aims to examine the role that new media—primarily social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube—can play in mobilizing crowds and sparking opposition movements. On stage, several dance styles grouped under the term “post-internet” are revived, particularly those stemming from the Hardstyle movement as well as Hard-Dances such as Tekstyle, Shuffle, Hakken, and Jumpstyle, among others. Highly intense and physically demanding for the dancers, a Jumpstyle sequence lasts an average of 25 seconds. Jumpers expend all their available energy to see their freestyle routine through to the end. The result is an exhilarating leg-focused dance—a powerful on-the-spot movement that reflects a certain letting go of latent frustration. At the end of their solo, a jumper is out of breath but at peace; they then radiate a centered strength, full of defiance and confidence. Eleven dancers from nine different countries—eleven jumpers with wild, contagious energy—share the energy and intensity of their dance, while keeping intact the restlessness of the body in revolt. TO DA BONE, (LA)HORDE’s first choreographic project for the stage, received the 2nd Award Danse élargie 2016 in Paris.

(THE) HORDE

Founded in 2013, (LA)HORDE is a collective comprising three artists: Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer, and Arthur Harel. Together, they explore the conventions of various artistic disciplines, particularly in the fields of the performing arts and contemporary art. At the helm of the CCN—Ballet National de Marseille since September 2019, (LA)HORDE creates choreographic works, films, video installations, and performances centered on the body in motion. Using a variety of media, they develop scenarios and actions rooted in contemporary issues and expressed across multiple narrative spaces. (LA)HORDE collaborates with communities of individuals on the margins of mainstream culture on a journey of solidarity and artistic exploration: people in their seventies, the visually impaired, smokers, teenagers… Opposed to all forms of hierarchy and cultural appropriation, they practice interconnection and cooperation. Both concerned and exploratory, they remain vigilant. The body is at the center of their creative work. They produce works inspired by their encounters with various online communities, seeking to define what dance has become in the wake of the internet’s advent—a subject dear to (LA)HORDE, which has led the collective’s members to describe the phenomenon using the term/concept: “post-internet dances.” – Claire Diez (journalist and playwright, dance specialist).
