Sea of Memories – Songs from the Greek islands

Concert
All audiences

In the language of primordial symbols, the sea, the element that fosters births, transformations and re births, represents the very dynamic symbol of life. Civilizations that had been developed along its coasts have never ceased their dialogue with the world of the sea, a dialogue sustained through maritime experience and the imaginative representations of the sea itself and what it means to those who are living so closely bound up with it: curiosity, riches, exchanges and Mystery.

The wild, foam-capped sea, the tranquility of a dead calm, the lapping of waves at the water’s edge: these are the image and once many are gathered together, they turn into a song.

Different songs, some light and joyful, other harsh and burdensome, others full of memories related to the merchant sailing journey. The wealth of Greek traditional music has been enriched by the maritime tradition, by its values and its charm. They embrace the ways that people have sung about the beauty of the sea, its dangers, its temptations and the risk of loss.

Kyriakos Kalaitzidis, pioneer of Greek traditional music, has selected some beautiful songs for this performance, celebrating the beauty of sailing the Aegean Archipelago, performed by Erini Derebei.

Erini Derebei: voice, flutes

Kyriakos Petras: violin

Iakovos Moisiadis: island luth

Kyriakos Kalaitzidis: oud and artistic direction
