TUQUS isan immersive audiovisual performance that explores musical and gestural traditions associated with trance and collective gatherings in the Mediterranean region. With a title meaning “ritual” in Arabic, the work seeks to uncover the connections between these traditions across history, territories, and shared migration patterns, blending electronic music with a documentary approach. From Greece to Palestine, from Egypt to Morocco, from Italy to Tunisia, the forms vary, but the underlying gesture remains the same everywhere: music and its repetition draw the body into dance, toward a moment of togetherness where trance emerges and the bonds between the living are strengthened.
This project builds on Khalil Epi’s work on popular and ritual music, which beganwith Aïchoucha.TUQUS expandsthis research both geographically and symbolically to offer a powerful and deeply embodied stage experience, where the concert becomes a shared ritual.
