Performances by artists/students from the Beaux-Arts d'Aix-en-Provence in co-production with Frac Sud - Cité de l'art contemporain

Elodie Rougeaux-Léaux, Geun young Hwang and Gaël Lévêque create situations in the public space that are sometimes participative, sometimes collective, but always pretexts for reinvesting the artistic field of performance art as a fully-fledged medium of contemporary creation. These artistic proposals question our relationship to space, collaboration and movement.

Performance by Élodie Rougeaux-Léaux

This performance is a fable about the manufacture of local and symbolic identity within the tourist industry. A strange traveler will cross landscapes of words, in search of archaism and authenticity. Viewers may be invited to consider the commodification of landscapes, symbols and folklore with the traveler. The story will never tell us whether the traveler is a tourist or a local, never knowing who uses who, who feeds on who, who devours who.

Élodie Rougeaux-Léaux

Élodie Rougeaux-Léaux is a visual artist and researcher. After training in space design and the performing arts, she will complete her artistic career at the Beaux Arts d'Aix-en-Provence in 2021. Her work questions our relationship with work, know-how and domestic ritual, and explores notions of collective mythology, tradition, transmission and the interdependence of bodies within a group. Her work takes the form of choreographic performances, sculptural installations and videos. She has presented her work in France and abroad, notably at the Festival Actoral in Marseille, the Frac Paca, the Château de Servières, the Château Lacoste and the French Institutes in Italy and Morocco.

Performance by Hwang Geun Young :

For this performance, entitled "La sardine géante", I was inspired by the popular French expression "C'est la sardine qui a bouché le port de Marseille", which dates back to the 18th century and means an exaggeration or fable. The expression is based on a true story: French prisoners from Pondicherry are freed and taken on board the ship "Sartine". After a mistaken attack, the ship ran aground at the entrance to the port of Marseille, blocking navigation and creating a traffic jam. How did the giant sardine stuck in the harbor manage to get through? I'm particularly interested in the trapped body and the movements it takes to free itself in this situation. Through my gestures, how can this exaggerated story continue and create new humor?

Hwang Geun Young

Geun young Hwang was born in 1991 in Seoul, South Korea, and graduated from the École supérieure d'art d'Aix-en-Provence (2022). Her artistic practice revolves around performance and public space. The artist is interested in interactions between body and space, activating objects in space to create situations where they might find a form of autonomy through her gestures. For the artist, performance can take the form of body movement, something absurd and humorous. Geun Young Hwang's performances have been presented in various venues, including the Frac Sud in Marseille in 2022, the MAC Arteum in Châteauneuf-le-Rouge in 2023 as part of the P.A.C Festival and the Miramar residence in partnership with the Écoles du Sud network, the Institut Français de Fès in Morocco and Dos Mares.

Performance by Gaël Leveque

In the wrong place at the right time.
During the race, a discussion.
Yellowed keyboard, the traveler lingers in the flow.
A player in pain, shares his feelings.
From the refuge of his chair, he gives the location of his past checkpoints.
Each turn stretches time.
The encounter is woven, alone together.
In the midst of this throbbing of existence, a gentle soothing, like a breeze,
an understanding in shared solitude.
The galoubets, then, embrace them.
In the right place, at the wrong time.

Gaël Leveque

Gaël Lévêque is interested in the conditions of suspended moments. Often contextual, his installations, performances, sound and literary compositions and videos call upon the workings of an event to reveal its intensity. Through these operations of reversal, he reveals the backstage of occupied spaces and bears witness to the relationships that bind us together. If we say of a stage set or a sound track that they tint the action, his pieces function in the same way, as zones of porositý. They invite the audience to take part in a collective experience as much as they maintain the mystery: what chemistry allows the whole to exist?
