This immersive black and white video work is a reflection of my experiential self in close connection with the sea. I live just by the sea, literally by the water’s edge, and therefore I experience its moods, its sounds, and its voices every day of my life. I chose to live in remoteness where no man-made sounds are heard and therefore it's just the sea and me. I see ‘Intertide' as a work that transcends the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible, as it captures the profound connection between myself and the sea. The visuals and sounds serve as a poignant reflection of the experiential self, woven intricately into the fabric of the ever-changing seascape that envelops my daily existence. Through the lens and audio recording devices, I become both an observer and participant in the silent dialogue with the sea, capturing not only the visual beauty but also the unheard orchestrated sonic textures within.

The filming and sound of ‘Intertide’ capture detail to emphasise and highlight the intricate patterns, shapes, and movements of the seabed. The absence of colour becomes a deliberate choice, emphasising the elemental purity of the untouched environment, while shadows and light create a random interplay within the visual field. In sharing my experiences, I am inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the sensory richness of my daily life. I invite them to take time and experience the subtle dance of the sea’s reflections and shadows, to engage with the often overlooked details of the sea.

“I went to the Pearl River Delta in China to look for the remains of women that found autonomy by creating a sisterhood called Zishunu (meaning self combed women) starting in the 18th Century. I could not find them and thus went to trace their steps from when they fled the rise of the Chinese Republic. I wanted to find their stories inside the water they went upon on their way out. I found a 95-year-old fisherman who taught me how to make a fishnet, so that I could go and fish for the stories of the sisters. That man was the last one of his clan that knew the craft—and he also took me into the sea to fish to find the stories.”
