This workshop explores the powerful role of African music in telling stories of migration across the Mediterranean. Drawing from traditional rhythms, contemporary sounds, and songs of resilience, participants will engage with music that evokes sea journeys, experiences of exile, and the search for refuge. Through listening, creating, and sharing music together, the workshop will highlight the ways African musical traditions carry memory, identity, and hope, while fostering deeper empathy and understanding of migration’s human stories.

Vana Ba Afrika (which means “Children of Africa” in the Shona language of Zimbabwe) is a non-profit cultural association active in Athens since 2013, made up of first- and second-generation migrants, refugees, Afro-Greeks, and friends of African culture. Its mission is to promote the richness of African cultures through music, dance, crafts, gastronomy, traditional workshops, as well as charitable initiatives such as building a school classroom in Mali or a water source in Ethiopia, in collaboration with local communities in Greece and Africa.

The association organizes major events in Athens, including the African Spring Festival, the Pan-African Festival, and Africa Day celebrations, which feature African dances, live music, storytelling, face-painting, food, crafts, and interactive activities for all ages.

With the vision of establishing an African cultural center in Athens, Vana Ba Afrika provides a space where people can share their stories, showcase African culture, and strengthen solidarity and intercultural dialogue.
