Traditional esparto grass weaving workshop

This esparto workshop in Ibiza is designed to introduce participants to one of the island’s most representative traditions: the “llata” craft. In a historical context shaped by a subsistence economy, local communities made the most of available resources, and esparto grass played a key role in everyday life. This natural fiber was used to create essential items such as local bags, baskets, traditional sandals, reflecting a culture deeply connected to its environment.

Throughout the workshop, participants will become familiar with esparto as a material, learn where the plant grows in Ibiza’s natural landscape, explore its traditional uses, and understand how it was harvested and processed. Beyond technical skills, the experience aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving these traditions and recognising their cultural value.

As a hands-on activity, participants will create their own handcrafted piece—such as a pendant or keychain—which they can take home as a meaningful souvenir of the experience.
