NKISI Presents ‘Serpent Songs’

Performance

Inspired by Nkisi’s ongoing research into the ethnographic music archives (1893 till present), ‘Serpent Songs’ invokes the serpentine movements of sound and the migratory paths of its vibrations. The musical composition delves into the psycho-acoustics inherited from ancient musical traditions. Here, music emerges as an enchanted consciousness; a vessel for its mythopoetic remembrance. Inspired by the primordial snake ancestors of these ancient traditions who shaped landscapes, rivers, and hills, ‘Serpent Songs' traces the trails of music they left behind.

Their movements wrapped the world in a web of song and ceremony, infusing our living geographies with rhythmic and sensuous energies. Folkloric phenomena and its secret-keepers hold the keys to the mysteries that preserve the traces of these enigmatic rebellion practices, impulses born out of the desire for change. Singing and rhythm encourage the occurrence of sacred phenomena as they act as conduits for group cohesion, emotional bonding, and the formation of psych-energetic collective thought forms while preserving intergenerational continuity. By engaging ancestrality as a methodology, we explore the non-material as a critical archive of these Mystery Traditions. As a sound archaeology, it uncovers the unexplainable and the cosmologically anomalous, challenging dominant Western traditions and its ideologies. It asks: What is always in danger of being forgotten if not reperformed?

Phenomena is experience(d).

Nkisi

Nkisi is a creative musician and artist based in London with Kongo roots. She uses sound as a way to explore the spiritual technologies embedded in music and dance and how to keep these alive. Rhythm, sound and noise are used as ways to activate traces of memory inscribed in and by the body in motion. Through the use of sensory codes, Nkisi merges music, performance and research in ancient musical technologies to invite audiences to dance with the invisible and activate embodied forms of revolution and resistance for the unmaking and making of worlds.
