Workshop Leaders: Damir Bartol Indoš & Tanja Vrvilo Performance artists Damir Bartol Indoš and Tanja Vrvilo lead the children’s workshop Schachtophonia for Two Shoes on eight small sound instruments, schacthophones, inspired by Aphorism No. 6 by the precursor of Croatian literary avant-garde Janko Polić Kamov: On one foot life wears a cothurnus, whilst on the other a clown’s slipper. Kamov’s 24 Aphorisms (Accenni) were published in the Futurist-Papinist literary journal Lacerba in 1913, three years after his death, under the pseudonym Gian Paolo. The workshop is performed using authentic instruments – eight sound boxes with springs, known as schachtophones, and graphic colour scores created by Damir Bartol Indoš.

Based on Janko Polić Kamov’s Aphorism No. 6: On one foot life wears a cothurnus, whilst on the other a clown’s slipper. wears a cothurnus on one foot, and a jester’s slipper on the other. (La vita calza da un piede il coturno e dall’altro il socco.)

The workshop is led by performance artists Damir Bartol Indoš i Tanja Vrvilo.

The working method includes creating graphic scores for voice and instruments, introducing participants to sound instruments and their extended elements – such as vocal effects and springs placed inside sound boxes – as well as exploring text creation and the design and performance of graphic scores.

The project implementation includes: presentation and research-based activities in which participants, through a hands-on approach, have the opportunity to explore the schachtophones – original instruments created by Damir Bartol Indoš – and discover sound as one of the most exciting artistic media of today.

This activity is designed for children, aiming to introduce them to the magical world of experimental music and the unique instruments that Damir Bartol Indoš and Tanja Vrvilo use in their work. All instruments are made up of numerous components, with springs as a recurring and playful element – a recognizable leitmotif in these sound installations.

Guiding the children through the instruments, the artists will engage them in conversation and, through an interactive approach, allow them to try out the instruments and experience the sounds that emerge when several individuals play together

These workshops are designed for active participation in a unique process of creating experimental music and a collaborative sound-and-stage performance, using sound as a creative medium.
