A nocturnal journey by Demetris Kolokotronis, recomposed with Stelios Ilchuk through sharp editing and a unique soundtrack. The footage captures Cypriot ecosystems: critters in caves, aquatic beings flashing or glowing in dark waters, legless and many-legged creatures moving across the dry landscape. Human presence remains only as that of an observer and explorer, another animal existing in parallel, in an ethereal time and space. In parallel, at the premises of the museum, the lecture “A history of Cyprus through its animals: introductions, extinctions, interactions and depictions in ancient art” will take place.

A collection of footage taken at night by Demetris Kolokotronis in collaboration with Stelios Ilchuk. The material is recomposed through sharp, intuitive editing and a unique soundtrack that reframes these moments as ethereal fragments, questioning the time and space in which they exist.

The footage captures ecosystems found in Cyprus: dark caves where critters scatter across walls and floors, aquatic creatures racing through black waters, some reflecting the camera’s flash like mirrors, while others glowing with bioluminescence. Legless and multi-legged beings slide quickly or creep slowly through the dry Cypriot landscape, while the human presence remains that of an observer, an explorer—another animal existing in parallel.

Stelios Ilchuk

Stelios Ilchuk is a visual artist and music producer based in Paphos, Cyprus. He graduated in 2016 from the Graphic Design program at Central Saint Martins and completed his master's degree in 2021 at the Sandberg Instituut Design Department. In 2024, he co-founded Megadence, a creative studio in Paphos, together with Paris Christodoulou and Marina Demosthenous. His recent practice focuses on the observation of animals and the exploration of their forms and behaviors, analyzed through a deeply personal lens. Through his work, he reinterprets lived experiences, reflecting on themes of trauma and hope, and translating them across a range of media and materials.

Dimitris Kolokotronis

Dimitris Kolokotronis is an independent researcher who focuses on the systematic study, classification, and documentation of Cyprus’s biodiversity. In particular, his research on the fauna of mollusks (with a specialization in gastropods), from the Pliocene and Pleistocene to the contemporary period, has enriched knowledge of Cyprus’s marine biodiversity, as he has published numerous articles on new records of marine species in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. In parallel, he created the Instagram account @cyprus.naturalhistory, which functions both as an archive and a platform for photographic documentation of Cyprus’s natural history. Currently, his interests focus on recording and identifying the various species of moths found in Cyprus.
