Artwork description

Graham Hamilton's installation reflects his anthropological interest in modern artifacts and designed objects, the information and intentionality arising through their forms in a post-industrial revolution world. The identical shipping boxes that compose his artwork are filled with a golden liquid in which gleaned objects are immersed, echoing the machine aesthetic of the Hangar Y built in 1879 following the Paris World's Fair. As time goes by, the golden liquid evaporates, revealing these objects which have been removed from their context of production and purpose.
Conceived as a memorial, his artwork aims to render the idea of the long time needed for creation, which he sets in contrast with the rapid pace of global shipping, and addresses the themes of nostalgia, memory and even ecology. Circulating among the boxes, the spectators activate the installation by disturbing the surface of the bronze-like water with their footsteps.
