Immerse yourself in the world of Kristina Borg in this new episode of our series In The Eyes Of. The Maltese artist develops a socially engaged and participatory artistic practice based on talking, walking, and immersion in the local context. Her approach, which is not driven by a product at the end, is built around the place and its social, historical, and political context.

Currently in residence in Rijeka as part of the Art Explora cross-residency programme, Kristina explores the relation between water, motion and women. By observing the way water moves within and with our bodies, she reflects on its nourishing and protective roles, as well as on the notion of adaptability often associated with women. Fluidity here becomes a lens through which to question what it truly means to “adapt,” and what unfolds when one chooses not to conform to a patriarchal dominance.

To know better the city, Kristina followed the water: the sea, the water canal, the river, to the underground streams, and the spring water coming from the mountain. These flows reveal a city where water is omnipresent, yet sometimes inaccessible, almost forbidden. On small, hidden beaches, she finds a space to observe colours and movements, and to think with the water. There, a fundamental idea resonates: we are water, and it is water that brings us back to our origins.

This programme series of artistic residencies, initiated by Art Explora Foundation and The Island Club, invites artists from the Mediterranean basin to reside and create for a month in one of the itinerant cities. Supported by programme Europe Créative, this project aims to support contemporary creation from a transdisciplinary perspective, and to create a solid, interdependent network of cultural partners throughout the region.  Produced by PROJETS MEDIA in partnership with Art Explora Festival.
