IN THE EYES OF: SAMIR Laghouati-Rashwan - EP. 9
Discover Samir Laghouati-Rashwan in this new episode of our series “In The Eyes Of” and step into a world where ghosts challenge our relationship to otherness. A French artist with Maghrebi roots, Samir works at the intersection of film, photography, sculpture, and archival practices.
During his residency in Tirana, as part of the Art Explora Festival’s crossed residency programme, he explores the figure of the ghost as a way to question our fears. The ghost becomes a metaphor for the stranger — a mirror of collective memory and what endures beyond forgetting.
At Vila 31, in dialogue with the other resident artists, Samir investigates the invisible threads connecting Maghrebi and Albanian diasporas, colonial legacies, and buried family histories. His work seeks to demystify the figure of the artist and create spaces where history circulates differently — places where memory can be claimed, transformed, and passed on.
And you, are you afraid of ghosts?
"IN THE EYES OF” is a series of interviews with artists participating in the Art Explora Crossed residencies programme around the Mediterranean as part of the Art Explora Festival. This programme series of artistic residencies, initiated by Art Explora Foundation and The Island Club, invites artists from the Mediterranean basin to reside and create for a month in one of the itinerant cities. Supported by programme Europe Créative, this project aims to support contemporary creation from a transdisciplinary perspective, and to create a solid, interdependent network of cultural partners throughout the region.
