IN THE EYES OF: TAMARA AL-SAMERRAEI - EP 16
Discover Tamara Al-Samerraei in this new episode of our series In The Eyes Of, and dive into a residency shaped by sillence and the landscapes of childhood.
A Kuwaiti artist whose painting practice explores uninhabited spaces and silent architectures, Tamara Al-Samerraei settles in Cyprus as part of the Art Explora Crossed Residency programme.
For the artist, the island is not only a place of creation: it is also a refuge. Through the various geopolitical contexts that have marked Lebanon, Cyprus has often represented a space of safety, a temporary point of anchorage.
This time, she comes there to work. The residency becomes an opportunity to revisit places she frequented as a child: deserted houses, isolated beaches, landscapes marked by the absence of human presence.
Through this residency, her gesture becomes more minimalist: removing, simplifying, keeping only the essential. Abandoned architectures then become spaces of projection, somewhere between memory, refuge, and solitude.
In Cyprus, Tamara Al-Samerraei thus transforms a place of passage into a territory of creation and an environment where isolation becomes material for imagination.
"IN THE EYES OF” is a series of interviews with artists participating in the Art Explora Crossed residency programme around the Mediterranean as part of the Art Explora Festival. This programme series of artistic residencies, initiated by Art Explora Foundation and The Island Club, invites artists from the Mediterranean basin to reside and create for a month in one of the itinerant cities. Supported by programme Europe Créative, this project aims to support contemporary creation from a transdisciplinary perspective, and to create a solid, interdependent network of cultural partners throughout the region. Produced by PROJETS MEDIA in partnership with Art Explora Festival.
