IN THE EYES OF: MOUNA AHIZOUNE - EP. 13
Discover Mouna Ahizoune in this new episode of our series In The Eyes Of.
The Tangier-based artist, currently in residence in Athens as part of programme Art Explora programme , develops a practice centered on performance, tragedy, and raw materials. Her work explores how the body carries memory, pain, and silent forms of resistance, transforming gestures, repetitions, and everyday actions into thresholds of transformation.
In Athens, a city deeply marked by theatrical history, Mouna became interested in the traces of ancient tragedy and how suffering and resilience resonate in today's bodies. She draws on her memories and objects from her native village of Asguin—stones, mortar used by her mother—to transform physical effort and pain into performative gestures. Each gesture becomes a way of making tangible and symbolic what cannot be said.
Through her performances, the artist reveals the subtleties of bodily experience, the persistence of habits, and the silent memory inscribed in everyday gestures. Her work highlights the link between personal histories, inherited struggles, and the transformative potential of art, offering a sensitive reflection on endurance, resilience, and the power of gesture.
"IN THE EYES OF” is a series of interviews with artists participating in the Art Explora Crossed residency programme around the Mediterranean as part of the Art Explora Festival. This programme series of artistic residencies, initiated by Art Explora Foundation and The Island Club, invites artists from the Mediterranean basin to reside and create for a month in one of the itinerant cities. Supported by programme Europe Créative, this project aims to support contemporary creation from a transdisciplinary perspective, and to create a solid, interdependent network of cultural partners throughout the region. Produced by PROJETS MEDIA in partnership with Art Explora Festival.
